Using Essential Oils For Cleaning

Using essential oils for cleaning is a popular and natural alternative to conventional cleaning products.

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that possess various properties, including antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral effects.

Ways To Incorporate Essential Oils Into Your Cleaning Routine:

All-Purpose Cleaner: Create a homemade all-purpose cleaner by combining water, white vinegar, and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. Lemon, tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus oils are commonly used for their disinfecting properties and pleasant scents. Shake the mixture well before use and apply it to surfaces such as countertops, tiles, and floors.

Disinfecting Spray: To make a natural disinfecting spray, combine water, isopropyl alcohol or vodka, and several drops of essential oil with antimicrobial properties. Tea tree, peppermint, or thyme oil are good options. Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle and use it on high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and bathroom fixtures.

Air Freshener: Essential oils can freshen the air in your home. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to a spray bottle filled with water and mist it around the room. Alternatively, use an essential oil diffuser to disperse the fragrance throughout the space.

Laundry Freshener: Add a few drops of essential oil to an unscented laundry detergent or fabric softener to give your laundry a pleasant scent. Lavender, lemon, or orange oils work well for this purpose. You can also place a few drops of essential oil on a dryer ball or a piece of cloth and add it to your dryer cycle.

Carpet Deodorizer: Sprinkle baking soda infused with a few drops of essential oil on your carpets before vacuuming. Allow it to sit for a short while to absorb odours, then vacuum as usual. This method helps freshen up carpets and eliminate unpleasant smells.

Safety & Precautions

Please dilute essential oils properly, as they are highly concentrated. Conduct a patch test on a small area before using on delicate surfaces or fabrics to ensure they don’t cause any discoloration or damage. Additionally, keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets, some oils can be toxic if ingested.

While essential oils can be beneficial for cleaning, they may not have the same level of efficacy as commercial disinfectants. It’s important to consider the specific cleaning needs and desired level of disinfection for different surfaces and situations.
